In February 2009 the new economic stimulus package re-vamped the income tax credit previously offered to US consumers for installing qualifying energy-efficient home improvements. The IRC Sec. 25C now allows for a credit of up to 30% of the total cost of the qualifying improvement, up to a new maximum of $1,500 and the deadline for applying has been extended through to the end of 2010. According to the IRS Notice 2006-26, to qualify for the tax credit a metal roof must:
- have pigmented coatings that are specifically and primarily designed to reduce the heat gain of a dwelling unit when installed on the dwelling unit; and
- meet or exceed the Energy Star program requirements (as in effect at the time of installation).
