Metal Roofing Is More Than One Look

When property owners begin researching metal roofing, they often discover that it is not a single product or appearance. Metal roofing systems can be designed to resemble slate, cedar shake or traditional tile, and some can even incorporate solar-energy generation directly into the roof.

RARE Manufacturing Inc. introduced its first steel roofing product, European Tile, in 1993. Since then, the company has designed, developed and tested four additional systems: Ironwood Shake, Heavy Shake, Ironstone Slate and Ironwood e-Panel.

Together, these five products offer several ways to combine the long-term benefits of steel roofing with the architectural character of a home or commercial building.

Why Consider Steel Roofing?

Quality metal roofing is often selected as a long-term building component rather than a short replacement cycle.

  • Long Service Life – Metal roofing can have a proven performance expectation of more than 50 years.
  • Low Maintenance – A properly designed system requires less routine maintenance than many short-life materials.
  • Weather Resistance – Quality steel systems are selected for resistance to fire, hail and extreme winds.
  • Lightweight Design – Formed steel provides strength without the weight of many traditional roofing materials.
  • Energy Performance – Metal roofing can support energy-efficient building design and help reduce cooling demand.
  • Recyclability – Steel is recyclable and can support a lower-waste, long-term approach to roofing.

How Should a Roofing Profile Be Chosen?

There is no single profile that is right for every building. Appearance is important, but a professional recommendation should also consider the roof structure, assembly, climate and future needs.

Physical colour samples and completed-project photographs can help with the visual decision. A qualified contractor should then confirm whether the selected system is technically appropriate for the building and local requirements.

  • Roof slope, shape and complexity
  • Condition of the roof deck and existing covering
  • Ventilation and moisture management
  • Snow, wind, fire and regional conditions
  • Chimneys, skylights and roof penetrations
  • Installer experience and warranty requirements
